We take you back to another time…another place. Things were simpler then — or were they?

Join us on Tuesday, October 20 at 6:30 p.m. for a FREE performance of our new Old Time Radio Theatre ensemble, under the direction of Sheldon Metz, who will present an episode of Gunsmoke as well as My Friend Irma. These performances usually only run about 1 hour total.

Redondo Music Theatre (RMT) is pleased to present their 2009 season premiere event and fundraiser. “Lullabies of Broadway” opens September 13, 2009 at the Berger Auditorium, 1200 W. Speeday. The show starts at 3:00 pm, tickets are $20 at the door or by calling 1-888-349-4914.

This concert will feature memorable songs and music from such well-known Broadway shows as Cabaret, South Pacific, Sound of Music, West Side Story, and Fiddler on the Roof.

The particulars:

Tucson Academy of Leadership and Arts, a K-8 charter school for the performing arts, will be hosting an open house during the 4-6 pm slot. This is an open house for enrollment. Activities will take place in the street and on the third floor of the school. A jumping castle for the little ones.

ArtFare Artists will take over the ballroom on the third floor of the school with exhibitions of Dance, Singing, Youth Groups etc.

Tucson Birthday Ambassadors will be on hand to provide information about the other activities in the monthlong celebration of Tucson’s 234th birthday.

A stage will be set up in the street for live music and dance throughout the evening. A beer “garden” will open around 7 pm kicking off the “adult swim” portion of the evening. Burger City will serve as the “beer garden”. Local bands will perform.

Vendors will be serving burgers, hotdogs and street roasted corn will be available and much much more.

ArtFare is a 501 c 3 non-profit arts organization and this is the 6th year celebrating the Endless Summer of Tucson.

We are also celebrating the 100th birthday of Tucson Birthday Celebration’s founder, Cele Peterson.

Dignitaries, Artists, and UA students as well as downtown residents and the curious are all invited to attend

Burger City hosts Musical Fundraiser in Downtown Tucson – Sunday July 26

Burger City will open the evening of Sunday, July 26, 2009 for a special performance of Broadway/Gershwin/Porter standards presented by the aptly named trio “Marvelous Melodies”, with singers Amber Lee Harrington, Elizabeth (Beth) Clayton, and Chris Brewer, accompanied by pianist Harriet Siskin.

Also performing this Sunday evening will be Cici Salcido a blues and jazz singer, and Burney Starks rocking the house with music from the 50s.

Adding to the evening’s entertainment will be live karaoke. Our pianist will accompany you as you go solo or join the pros for a fun duet.

The Burger City kitchen will be open to ticket holders, with a special performance menu. They’re adding shrimp, pizza, and quesadillas for the event.

Parking is available in front of the restaurant or you can take advantage of security patroled, lighted parking at Pennington Garage on the Northwest corner of the block ($2 parking on Sundays). The Garage is approximately 60 feet from the entrance of Burger City and is open 24 hours a day.

The traditions, work, and combinations of Mme. Mitrovich and Cecchetti Technique are at the core of the work we do, though we love choreographing original ballet with original music. We have also been greatly influenced by Mr. George Zoritch, Stephanie Stiegers and Jane Matty. We’re grateful to our teacher Jose Valenzuela and his American Ballet Theater tradition and experience. Nancy Gambion who taught Cecchetti Technique at Pima Community College has renewed and influenced our technique and more recently Carrie Ragsdale, also from Pima.

We cherish our work with children and are quartered in an environment conducive to children’s performances, our own works, and in the near future, a new ballet featuring one of the great Capoesristas.

ArtFare Ballet is also open to parent/senior volunteers with performance skills or those who wish to participate in weight bearing/stretch technique classes or other specialized works for all ages. Participation to be determined by our teacher’s council.

The last ballet we performed “Scheherazade” featured two of our soloists and six local children. Our goal is to not only expose children who might not have dance or high art in their experience (classical dance, music, drawing, painting, poetry, etc) but also to have these children participate. They learn as they go, making their own costumes, learning to get themselves on and off stage at the proper time, learning to try really hard.

The Arizona Consortium for the Arts is a start-up, nonprofit group dedicated to supporting and fostering artists and the arts in Arizona, including the literary, visual and performing arts.

The Blue Guitar, the arts and literary journal of the Arizona Consortium for the Arts, seeks submissions in all genres — fiction, poetry, plays, creative nonfiction — for its inaugural spring issue. Writers must submit original work and must live in Arizona.

Simultaneous submissions will be accepted, but the writer must notify the magazine as soon as possible if the work is accepted elsewhere. Submissions selected by the editor will appear in the magazine in print; other submissions may appear on the magazine’s Web site. Writers who are selected also will have the opportunity to read at the magazine’s launch in April.

Tucson Arts Org Finds New Way to Fund Revitalization

ArtFare.org is opening a new eatery to support the arts and downtown revitalization. The Cultural Arts Corridor which radiates north and south on Sixth Avenue in the heart of downtown Tucson is busting out with new programming, new businesses and fresh young faces.

The management team of Burger City, in the former Georgets Restaurant at 47 N. 6th Avenue, is opening a hip and exciting hangout for downtown luncheons or for the after-sports, after-theater crowd. Boasting a menu of mouthwatering burgers with tempting toppings, Burger City features hand pressed sirloin patties and Tucson baked buns with fresh, hand cut fries or onion rings. Everything on the menu is ala carte, so each dining experience is sure to deliver exactly what you’re looking for.

The little “burger joint that could” is the final incarnation of the ArtFare vision, led by the unstoppable Tig Collins, to have a profitable and necessary business to support the financial goals of her multi-building arts complex. As a tenant looking to purchase the 6 buildings adjacent to one of the largest parking garages downtown, looking for funding sources had become a full time occupation for the executive director to the detriment of the arts programming itself.

After testing and revising the formula for a downtown “artists’ concept eatery” the current incarnation “Burger City” is opening to resounding success. With a soft opening behind them, it’s just a matter of clearing inspections for the grand opening. We’ll be following them as they grow to report on their success.

Whether you’re in the mood for southwestern flavor or Pacific Island spices, you’ll find it on this menu.

On a recent visit, Chef Jesse treated this writer to a signature burger, the Burger City Bacon ‘n Cheeseburger (BCBC). The six ounce burger featured slices of Granny Smith Apples and melted White Cheddar Cheese topped with two thick slices of bacon which had been smoked in Cherry Hardwood and prepared with Cracked Pepper. Oh My! I can’t wait to go back to try the Hanalei, a Teriyaki burger with a Pineapple “Jerky” twist.

charming, Roy is hands on and out to make sure your entire party feels at home and is well served by his professional young staff. While you’re waiting for your burger, you can watch it being made on the plasma screen TV mounted on the gallery wall in the dining room. I must be fully indoctrinated into the youtube generation as I found it a fascinating way to pass time.

The restaurant runs hours from 11 am til 10 pm Monday thru Wednesday and is open from 11 am til 3 am Thursday thru Saturday to accommodate the clubbers. The restaurant is closed on Sunday.

	BAAF – BRUSSELS ACCESSIBLE ART FAIR Autumn Edition 2008 23rd – 26th October, 2008 BAAF organizes informal art shows where the art-buying public can meet the artists. BAAF shows are staged twice a year (autumn and spring) in centrally located venues in Brussels. The first edition of the BAAF in December 2007 drew more than 500 visitors! People enjoyed the friendly, informal atmosphere of the fair, where they could browse through hundreds of contemporary works of art and purchase directly from the artist. This year’s edition will take place in the same central venue and will double in size to highlight the works of 20 international artists. There will be paintings, sculpture, photography, and prints on display, and they will all be priced between €50-€3000. BAAF provides local artists with a platform to show and sell their art. The artists are charged a basic flat fee and rate of commission which is lower than galleries. In this way BAAF provides access to both the public and artists to these uniquely informal and intimate networking events.
	BIACS3 – INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART OF SEVILLE 2nd October 2008 to 9th January 2009 In the global context of information and communication society, the Biacs3 is going to draw a new map of World Art, dealing with the specific aspects of media, environment and technology. With the title „youniverse“, the Biennial of Seville aims to show how contemporary art has changed worldwide through the influence of media, technology, science and architecture by achieving a main goal: the participation of the public and a new equation between man and environment. The creations of the selected artists (approximately 180 works) will focus on mobility, individualisation through technologies, quantum physics, nanotechnology, hydraulic engineering, architecture and environment. One of the main objectives of this edition is to show that technology as man-made nature can help solving the problems concerning natural environment. Another main subject is the democratization of art. The audience, rather than the artist, is the star. The Biascs3 will introduce herself to the public with a showcase of the 21st century’s most representative technical breakthroughs on the threshold of a material revolution that from simulation can lead us to stimulation, and wants to invite visitors to personally interact with the contents of the exhibition.
	28TH BIENAL DE SÃO PAULO – “IN LIVING CONTACT” October 26th –December 6th, 2008 After fifty-eight years of Bienal, São Paulo has become an international art centre, a cosmopolitan city, a reference in the globalized art scene; Brazil has become in turn a point of attraction for artists, curators, gallery owners, and international collectors. Brazilian artists hold important positions in the history and discourse of post-war modernity and in the production of contemporary visuality. The objectives of 1951 –to place Brazilian art in living contact with the art of the world and to strive to turn São Paulo into a world art centre– have been accomplished. This year, curators Ivo Mesquita and Ana Paula Cohen have invited 42 artists from 21 different nationalities for the exhibition that will take place in the Pavilhão Ciccillo Matarazzo – Parque Ibirapuera, São Paulo, from October 26th to December 06th, 2008.
	IKF LATIN AMERICAN ART AUCTION 2008 October 14th, 2008 THE FOURTH ANNUAL IKF LATIN AMERICAN ART AUCTION 2008 ATTRACTS SOME OF THE BEST CUTTING-EDGE ARTISTS IN THE WORLD The International Kids Fund (IKF), a program of Jackson Memorial Foundation, has scheduled the IKF LATIN AMERICAN ART AUCTION 2008 on October 14th, 2008. This is the signature fundraising event for the organization. It will be held at the prestigious CIFO – Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation at 1018 North Miami Avenue in Miami, Florida. Known in the art world as the “Collector’s Auction,” there is both a silent and live auction. The art selection is under the direction of Hernan Carrara and Max Berney of the Miami Art Project. More than 100 of the most renowned contemporary Latin American artists donate their works to the auction. Artville Berlin – Call to Artists

Berlin, one of the leading art cities in Europe is the obvious location for the next Artville outside of Denmark and will represent a great alternative and platform for the individual artist.

Perfect Timing
Artville will take place simultaneously with five other Art Fairs in Berlin, of which the largest – Art Forum Berlin – last year had a total number of visitors of 40,000. Artville will benefit of the natural synergy arising between the many art fairs, which together attract even more visitors to the city during this period.

Location
Artville have found a fantastic location in Berlin at Tempelhof airport only 10 minutes with the U-Bahn from Berlin Mitte (city centre). The building is located just across the old airport, where the Art Fair “Preview Art” is taking place. Preview Art is ranked as the second most important Art Fair in Berlin and had more than 10,000 visitors last year. Out of a total of six art fairs in Berlin, Artville and Preview Art are the only exhibitions that are so conveniently close to each other – literally only a footstep away – which will naturally arouse further attention and interest in Artville as a new art fair in Berlin.

The venue of the Artville exhibition, a building originally built for habitation, has a unique circular shape and supports Artville´s unique character. A total of 2700m2 spread over 5 floors where 9 of the flats will be used as exhibition space. The apartments are very different in both size and condition. Some appear particularly newly renovated; others appear completely raw, unpolished and edgy. This contrast creates a unique opportunity to highlight the various artistic forms, and Artville adds a new dimension of space as anart exhibition. Based on the concept of creating opportunities for the individual artist, Artville have elected this versatile building to attract a diversity of artists as exhibitors.

Stands/Booths
The apartments will be divided into booths adapting the rooms´ architectural possibilities. There will be a variation from one to nine booths in each room. The application form(online) is the ability for the artist to choose whether the site should be in one of the unpolished or the renovated apartments. The booths vary in size but will have a minimum of 9 square meters. If choosing the unrenovated room, you get the double amount of square meters for the same price. The rough and edgy apartments fit particularly well arts of performance, sculptures and installations, of course, depending on the artist’s own desire in matter of image and performance.

Accommodation/Getting there
Berlin is famous for its cheap hostals and you can find a place to stay in the city centre for very few money compared to other capitals. Also getting there is easy: Berlin has two airports and both are flown into by Easy Jet, hlx & Co.

The application form must include images of 3 selected works of art attached. All applicants’ art works will be curated by 3 curators, of which the best 100 candidates will be offered a free space and participation at Artville Berlin. Using a variety of materials- gesso, plaster, paper, transfers, glues, and paints, as well as found textural elements- participants will experiment with numerous techniques to advance inner creativity through the elements of texture and layering. The process explored can be applied to artists’ books, paintings, sculpture, and all forms of mixed-media artwork.

Lin Fife is a tenured Professor of Visual Art, at the University of Colorado teaching in all areas of fibers/textiles, papermaking and artists’ books. She is known for her creative work in handmade paper and mixed-media installations, which have been exhibited nationally and internationally. Her work is included in two books on contemporary papermaking and in several private and corporate collections. Gabriel Ayala, who will be playing classical, flamenco and tango guitar, performs regularly throughout the United States and has appeared at the Kennedy Center for the Arts, National Museum for the American Indian, ASU Keer Cultural Center, and Meyer Theatre in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He has been recognized by the State of Arizona and Governor Janet Napolitano for his musical achievements and has been named a Tucson Citizen of the Month as well as Artist of the Month for the IICOC (Indigenous Internet Chamber of Commerce). Ayala resides in Tucson, Arizona.

Ayala’s first CD, “Gabriel Ayala,” was nominated for a Native American Music Award, Best Independent Recording in 2003. Ayala’s most recent release, 2008 “Tango!” includes many original arrangements by Ayala and was released by Canyon Records. Gabriel’s website is www.ayalaguitarist.com

Jocelyn Celaya is a Radical Classical guitarist and vocalist, born in San Diego, Ca and Rosarito, Mexico. She performs a unique fusion of methods and styles that have a classical foundation and combines this with her own brand of vocal accompaniment. Andrés Perches Lemons started playing flamenco guitar nine years ago. However, his first interest in music was the electric guitar, which he began playing at age 12. Andrés has visited and studied in Sevilla, Spain. Andrés has performed with several Flamenco ensembles and accompanies Flamenco Singers/Dancers on a regular basis. Body Stories is a multimedia collection of personal narratives striving to represent the full range of human physical experience and expression.

Gina Cestaro is interested in collecting stories as a documentation of our relationships with our bodies at this particular time in history. In presenting these stories in a public forum she is offering them as a point of connection and/or education between all of us participating, either directly by telling our stories, or indirectly by being witness to them.
